Friday, September 15, guests enjoyed a perfect evening at the Frick Environment Center, Harvest Celebration.
The sell out crowd began the evening with a tour of the "From Slavery to Freedom Garden", narrated by Camila Rivera-Tinsley, parks director of education. The garden showcases plants that were used for food and medicinal purposes as black Americans made their way North seeking sovereignty. The freed slaves brought to our region a wealth of knowledge and skills including horticulture and agriculture.
The building and grounds provided a beautiful backdrop for the occasion, as guests enjoyed their strolling dinner created by area chefs, each using an ingredient provided by the garden. The balconies and walkways provided picturesque views of the fountain and landscape.
The building itself, is on track to be the greenest building in the world. The new center runs entirely from energy provided by the sun and earth. Geothermal walls heat and cool the building, and solar panels provide energy. Since opening in 2016, the center has welcomed over 65,000 people.
The Harvest Celebration raised funds for the educational programs. Over 2500 children have been through the center's program since opening in September 2016. To donate and learn more about the Center and garden visit: https://www.pittsburghparks.org/
*On a side note to area brides, this beautiful facility will be available for weddings starting in July of 2018. This is an amazing addition to Pittsburgh, and I would urge you to come out and see the Frick Environment Center, it is truly a great place to spend the day!
